Professor Costume

The world “professor” is based on a Latin word meaning “to profess to be an expert in a particular area”. Typically you will find professors teaching about subjects within their realm of knowledge from mathematics to history in a college or university setting. For the most part, the term “professor” applies to a senior-level academician on a tenure-track, however, the title is also used loosely to describe a instructor in an organization of higher learning. If you are interested in dressing in a professor costume for a Halloween celebration, masquerade celebration or even a retirement roast, there are many ideas for a professor costume to choose from.

The typical look of a professor costume would be of an older gentleman wearing a tweed sports jacket (leather patches on the pockets), rumpled khaki pants, disheveled white hair, a pipe and a armload of books. Many of these items for a professor costume are no doubt found in your own closet or the closet of your father, but you will want to add plenty of great professor costume props. An Albert Einstien wig will give your professor costume the look of a more seasoned citizen along with a messy look that says you care more about your studies than your appearance.  A pair of eyeglasses will also give your professor costume a studious look; use a pair of black horn rimmed glasses for your professor costume or be silly with a pair that has pop out google eyes. There is even a “nutty professor” mask that pulls together the whole crazed look for your professor costume.

While a professor might be found on a college campus near you, they are also popular characters in books, television and major motion pictures. On the campy 1970s television series, “Gilligan’s Island”, it is the Professor character that solves many of the stranded-on-a-deserted-isle gang problems through his use of theories and applied knowledge – plus he can build almost anything with coconuts and bamboo. Show off your smarts in a professor costume styled after this television character (who was a fictional high school science teacher named Roy Henry) who was usually shown in his castaway outfit of a pair of khaki pants and a white button down shirt.  Get your point across and have friends complement this professor costume by suiting up as Gilligan, Mary Ann, Ginger, the Skipper or Mr. and Mrs. Thurston Howell.
